I have found that running gives me time to think, running give me time to introspect and running helps me heal so WHY ARE WE RUNNING?. I have embarked on all these journeys over the past 12 years for probably two main reasons. I suppose the first is the selfish side.
It’s something I love to do, to push myself mentally and physically to the limit to test the mind and the body. But also to be out there where few have travelled and experience the real side of life. I feel that life is so short, and we need to get the most out of it, learning the simple life lessons and just appreciate what we have.
It’s on journeys like this that one realises how little we actually need to get through every day. If I look back, it’s shocking to see how wasteful and demanding we are on the planet.
Through journeys like this, it’s not only the appreciation of what I have in life, but the outpouring of friendship from friends and strangers, that’s what gives life value. This is where a journey gets real.
No journey like this would be of much value if I were to come home with only the self-fulfilment of what I have achieved. The real success of any journey is when it is bigger than the individual. That we can now put out our hands and touch the lives and hearts of those around us, and make a difference in a stranger’s life.
I sit here writing this blog thinking about the interactions that Andy and I had in the haemodialysis unit in a hospital in Yulin. Row upon row of patients were lying there, attached to machines which have now become a crucial part of their lives. Screens flashing, dials slowly turning and the life blood that flowed through their veins was now being extracted filtered and cleaned and pumped back into them so that they can live a normal life for the next few days until the cycle has to be repeated.
As we walked between the beds, they would sit up look at us and give a welcoming smile. Even the patients that were asleep and were woken up, would sit up and their face would light up with a welcoming smile.
The interaction in this unit touched me deeply and inspired both of us to go out and in some way return the inspiration that we received from the strangers to go out there and not give up. To fight for every day and make the best of it, not to complain and be thankful that we are healthy.
This is a message that we are now carrying with us as we run the wall: to inspire everyone we meet to get out there, be thankful and appreciate life. But, live a healthy life – it’s in your hands to take control of.

What Makes Good Art? What makes art good? What makes work and business inherently good? To do good work, and create good work is something that we all want to do, right? We also want to be told that we have done something good, created something that people like and want. We want to know […]
Why is a 216-year-old voluntary member-based organisation like the Cape Chamber of Commerce thriving under lockdown? It shouldn’t – when times get tough, members will look at their expenses and cut those that are ‘voluntary’. People tend to pay their utilities, because if you don’t pay, you don’t get to play. And heaven forbid we […]
The power of servant leadership as I was driving through one of the low-income neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Durban recently. There had been heavy rains that had led to significant flooding. When approaching an area of the road that was completely flooded, I noticed a group of boys and young men busy filling […]
August 19th, 1996 – A date that marked a new beginning for our family, The Value of Mail is no more! That was the day we landed for the first time in which would be our new home – Canada. I was 19 years old. In 1996, there was no social media. The Internet was […]
This The Incredible Desert Elephants expedition was the first in a series of five Beyond Expeditions with Jacques Marais and Peter van Kets. The idea was to mountain bike the edge of the incredible Namib Desert from Serra Cafema on the Angolan border to Swakopmund along the coast of Namibia. In this episode, we take […]
To Lead Yourself First when Elizabeth Hurley was in college in Chicago, she worked as a waitress at my favorite pizza place in the world, Giordano’s, slinging deep-dish pizzas — and also taking great care of customers and making lots of conversation. Her ease in connecting with customers prompted many people to suggest that Elizabeth […]
On this day that has been set aside to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it’s important to note that Dr. King’s words still ring true today, It Really Boils Down to This. The power of truth does not decay with the passing of time. Dr. King’s message is proof that you […]
We all want to come up with the BIG Little Breakthroughs and the winning idea, solve the challenging problem, or invent something major that will become a staple for generations to come. Under pressure, it’s easy to freeze up and procrastinate. We get the false assumption that the only ideas that are important are the BIG […]
