On this day that has been set aside to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it’s important to note that Dr. King’s words still ring true today, It Really Boils Down to This. The power of truth does not decay with the passing of time.
Dr. King’s message is proof that you don’t have to be in orbit to have an orbital perspective. Dr. King’s message is proof that you don’t have to be in space to realize that we are not only deeply interconnected but also deeply interdependent. In other words, we need each other.
In 1967 Dr. King gave the world his Christmas Sermon on Peace where he talked about the Interrelated Structure of All Reality. Exactly one year later, three humans confirmed this truth when they became the first to see the whole planet hanging in the blackness of space. As the crew of Apollo-8 rounded the dark side of the Moon and saw the Earth rising above the lunar surface they profoundly experienced the truth that we are one people, traveling on one planet toward one common future.
The Apollo-8 mission came at the end of 1968, a year that saw much strife and conflict in the U.S. and most of the world. It was a year where fear and hate were seemingly winning out, a year where hate took Dr. King from us. But as Dr. King eloquently proclaimed there is a path out of the darkness of hate:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate;
only love can do that.
Hate multiplies hate,
violence multiplies violence,
and toughness multiplies toughness
in a descending spiral of destruction….
The chain reaction of evil —
hate begetting hate,
wars producing more wars —
must be broken,
or we shall be plunged
into the dark abyss of annihilation.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Strength To Love, 1963
The best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy is to make 2021 the year that we put into action the truths that,
“We are tied together in the single garment of destiny, caught in an inescapable network of mutuality. And whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”
And that only through love, compassion, and empathy can we overcome the darkness and hate that has found a new foothold in our world.

Executives are often presented with important staffing decisions to support the ebb and flow of their business plan and to use Event Management Company vs. Internal Team. I am very excited today to talk about one of my favorite topics of all time, HOW TO REMOTIVATE YOURSELF. Based on the fact that I got this question twice yesterday from two separate people from two separate parts of the country means that I’ve got to address this. It’s not just how do you […]
I have found that running gives me time to think, running give me time to introspect and running helps me heal so WHY ARE WE RUNNING?. I have embarked on all these journeys over the past 12 years for probably two main reasons. I suppose the first is the selfish side. It’s something I love […]
I have worked with corporate teams that measure what seems like everything. My concern with these teams isn’t what they are measuring, but rather what they are not measuring — leadership effectiveness. Teams measure on-time delivery, sales call per day, employee engagement, and so many more useful metrics. I’ve even seen a team measure coffee […]
The word strategy has become a word that often evokes fear, confusion, and in most cases stress as to how to Identifying and executing a winning strategy. The reason for it, is a strategy has often not been thought through, and the outcome has not been outlined. What I mean by that is, we often […]
