I realised everything you do is marketing after I recently stayed at a five-star hotel and found a major marketing problem lurking in the wardrobe in my room.
Upon check-in I was welcomed enthusiastically, and my membership status recognised with a room upgrade. I was even presented with a welcome gift to thank me for my loyalty.
I made my way up to my room and my luggage was promptly delivered to my room by the cheery concierge.
At this point, I have paid just over $300 to the hotel and had my credit card authorised for a further $100 for incidentals.
I opened the wardrobe to hang up some clothes and my heart sank. With 5-6 positive touchpoints in my experience so far — all that said ‘we value your loyalty’ — I was now faced with coat hangers that say ‘we assume you’re a thief’.
I realise that in the scheme of things, annoying coat hangers that are permanently attached to prevent theft is a pretty minor issue. But it’s still sending a covert message that belies what the hotel is going to great lengths to communicate overtly.
Come on hotels, you can do better. If you really do value my loyalty, give me some proper coat hangers. I promise I won’t steal them.

Sam Stewart, She survived breast cancer, an abusive marriage, financial ruin, a failed suicide attempt, body dysmorphia and much more, rises to the top and is back on her feet with purpose. If Oprah Winfrey, Brené Brown and Joan of Arc somehow managed to have a lovechild together, the result would most likely be Cape […]
In the traditional sales world, Engaging and Interactive Meeting, a professional salesperson would prepare for, and focus on, commanding the room, the conversation and the sales process, and you would be prepared to maximise the chances of success at whichever stage of the sale you are because that’s how you win deals for an Interactive […]
What’s on your resilience resume? For most people in North America, this week marks the first anniversary of the pandemic changing our lives. It started with disbelief, upheaval, and constant change and progressed to the monotony of sameness. Regardless of the phase, there has been a consistent undertone of uncertainty as to what comes next. […]
I Got Sued YESTERDAY. Just like this headline is misleading and complete clickbait, such is the reality we are living in, and the point of this author and PAPERBACK WRITER. I clicked on a post recently after reading wild news stories ACROSS THE UNIVERSE and stumbled upon the Yahoo! article entitled: “Fans Sue Movie Yesterday”. I […]
I am as outraged as you are when I heard the news of the violent death of Uyinene Mrwetyana in September last year, the heartbreak and the anguish felt physically unbearable. I was overwhelmed by grief and outrage. I was consumed with terror for our daughters. As I started to catch my breath and look […]
I have heard I’m not really a water-person statement so many times. But what does it really mean? You come from water, you drink water, and it turns out – water knows you very well whether or not you want to be part of the relationship. We are all water people, you might just not […]
