As a seasoned frontline journalist and broadcaster, Mandy Wiener has a unique perspective on current affairs and A Country Worth Fighting For on how history unfolds in South Africa.
Mandy has had a front row seat to the nine wasted years, the anatomy of the state capture project, the evisceration of state owned entities and the establishment of the shadow state.
But her focus is on the ‘Hope Dealers’, those who withstood the onslaught. She tells the stories of the good people who did their jobs, the whistleblowers who felt compelled to speak truth to power, the civil society activists who stepped into the breach and the journalists who dug up the dirt to hold authorities to account.
There are lessons in these stories for corporates and for individuals on what needs to be done to improve governance, to change legislation and to create a speak-up culture in order to root out corruption. Most importantly these stories will inspire the audience not to be apathetic or complacent, but to fight for a better South Africa.
Whistleblowing and Corruption – Shifting the Culture – A Societal Revolution
Mandy Wiener & Bianca Goodson
It was whistleblowers and journalists that brought down the State Capture project and helped bring widespread corruption and malfeasance into the light. Through exposing wrongdoing and dodgy deals, these brave individuals were able to hold power to account, return billions of stolen rand to the fiscus and remove a political regime.
Yet despite their heroism, whistleblowers are considered problematic, pushed to the fringes of society and treated like impimpis and pariahs. Sadly South Africa does not have a culture of celebrating or rewarding whistleblowing. In 2020, journalist Mandy Wiener published The Whistleblowers to highlight these experiences. Shortly after the publication, Bianca Goodson, a former Trillian executive, wrote to the President urging him to protect whistleblowers as they are the strongest weapon against corruption.
In this talk, these two formidable women join forces and share unique insight through personal experience and the lessons for individuals and corporates around governance, culture and processes. They emphasise the need for a societal revolution in how we treat and protect whistleblowers. Are you just ticking the box or do you truly have the requisite systems and people in place to root out corruption?

An interesting story of the emergence of Ferrero and Lessons Leading to Success, the famous world company with a turnover of more than 10 billion dollars, producing popular sweets and famous chocolate eggs with funny toys inside. It all started shortly after the end of World War II in a small provincial Italian town. Michele Ferrero […]
To Think like a leader, you can’t really miss it. The headlines, the endless discussions and debates, the boundless optimism from some and apocalyptic warnings from others. Unless you’ve had your head stuck in the sand for the last few months – and who, at times, hasn’t wanted to do that?! – the turbulence in […]
Rebel technologists thrive when a couple of key environmental factors are in place The first thing is budget. Making sure that you can find the necessary budget to be able to instil these changes is an ideal starting point. If you aren’t working towards some kind of return on investment, somewhere along the line, why should […]
We all want to come up with the BIG Little Breakthroughs and the winning idea, solve the challenging problem, or invent something major that will become a staple for generations to come. Under pressure, it’s easy to freeze up and procrastinate. We get the false assumption that the only ideas that are important are the BIG […]
I was concerned about working virtually and leading through adversity so In March 2020, when the world shut down and my live event calendar was wiped clean As my speaking business went online, I wondered if it would survive the transformation. Would I still have an impact? Would I still matter? I’m sure you […]
I have found that running gives me time to think, running give me time to introspect and running helps me heal so WHY ARE WE RUNNING?. I have embarked on all these journeys over the past 12 years for probably two main reasons. I suppose the first is the selfish side. It’s something I love […]
How your company’s career page is deterring candidates from applying. Every employee at your company can make or break a customer’s experience. I have heard I’m not really a water-person statement so many times. But what does it really mean? You come from water, you drink water, and it turns out – water knows you very well whether or not you want to be part of the relationship. We are all water people, you might just not […]
