Regular Mindfulness Practice, Meditation and Benefits
Forget about the incense making you feel all balmy…
I want to share with you some of the scientific evidence of the benefits of Regular Mindfulness Practice (*)
Results from fMRI scans after 8 weeks of Regular Mindfulness Practices training…
Intervention studies have been carried out that specifically look at what happens to the brains of people who practise approximately 20 or 30 minutes of mindfulness most days.
Important differences have been observed in their brains:
1. They have a thicker cortex (that’s the outer shell of the brain). This is of enormous benefit, as increasing cortical thickness even by a fraction of a millimetre makes a huge difference in brain ability.
2. Those who have meditated for lengthy periods of time have a measurably thicker prefrontal cortex. This is the area behind the forehead. These prefrontal brain regions help regulate attention, emotion, and actions.
3. They also have thicker cortex in the insula, a part of the brain that helps us tune into ourselves and also tune into the emotions of other people.
4. They have measurably thicker cortex in the area of the hippocampus, a part of the brain that puts things into perspective and also reduces both the activity and size of the amygdala, leading to increased resilience and reduced reactivity.
5. Also, after an 8-week mindfulness course participants were found to have a stronger immune system.
6. Another finding was that meditators have greater activation of the left prefrontal cortex which decreases negative emotions.
7. Brain wave activity in the very important gamma range substantially increased. These brain waves are associated with greater learning from life experiences and also a greater sense of integration and wholeness.
8. Meditators have also been found to have preserved telomeres, which are strips of atoms at the very ends of the chromosomes that protect us against age related illnesses of various kinds.

It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since I was honoured and humbled to carry the 2020 Olympic Torch Hindsight to Rekindle Embers of Hope, on the day of the opening ceremonies of the Sydney 2000 Olympics; one of only 26 people before Cathy Freeman lit the cauldron in the stadium. I’d been privileged […]
When I was in high school i realized Leaders You Dont Need To Have All The Answers, there was a teacher that had a brilliant line when he was asked a question that he didn’t know the answer to in the moment. He would state: “That is beyond the scope of this course,” with a […]
To Lead Yourself First when Elizabeth Hurley was in college in Chicago, she worked as a waitress at my favorite pizza place in the world, Giordano’s, slinging deep-dish pizzas — and also taking great care of customers and making lots of conversation. Her ease in connecting with customers prompted many people to suggest that Elizabeth […]
I’ve recorded a short video about the value of taking time ‘in’ to help with solve problems, creating, sorting & strategising. I like to call it ‘time-in’ because these insights don’t come from our busy external world, nor from our noisy internal chatter. They come from a place within us that very few of us […]
I think we often need a reminder of our home and our Earth Day. We have a 24-hour day based on the rotation of our planet relative to the sun. But it is much more personal than that. The day is also based on our daily perspectives and ways of viewing the day. The world […]
Successful women in leadership roles manage their Personal Branding Benefits on a daily basis; and they started focusing on creating theirs early-on in their careers. Why do they focus on Personal Branding? And why has it become such a hot topic in the workforce today? Smart women in business understand the basic concept that every […]
Businesses adopting a Working Remote workforce is a trend that has gained an increase of momentum this past year and for some, will continue to be reality for the foreseeable future. There are of course the obvious benefits for a remote team – no commutes for employees and lower overhead costs such as an office […]
A common problem new pilots struggle with is avoiding a PIO or pilot-induced oscillation. So how do we Stop the Cycle as We’re all familiar with the concept of overcorrecting in a car. A deer runs out, you’re driving tired, you’re near the edge of the road, and you yank the wheel the other direction […]
