In his book “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” Patrick Lencioni identifies the heart of dysfunction as a lack of trust and How to build trust.
So, how do we build teams that trust each other, particularly in a hybrid environment?
The first step toward achieving confident cohesion is to help your team members connect with one another on a personal level.
While this is challenging enough to accomplish in person, it is even more difficult when some members of your team have not and may never meet in person.
You can try ice breakers or play a game over Zoom, but scrambling to pick a fun fact or discussing irrelevant topics won’t help anyone open up.
Like any good coach knows, you must do everything in your power to help them bond as a team.
To accomplish this, you must identify the right questions to ask your team members, and then listen with the intention of understanding rather than merely responding.
These questions can range from generic to specific, and from professional to personal.
Since everyone is unique in unlimited ways, it might take time to discover each person’s Goldilocks zone for how much they are willing to open up, but discovering that sweet spot and listening with care will create an all star player out of a rookie recruit.
The key is to have a plethora of questions at the ready, and to make the time to have meaningful conversations.
It doesn’t matter if you’re having a one-on-one meeting, or a full team discussion.
What matters is that the person you’re talking to understands how important they are to the team’s success.
One of my favorite quotes goes, “There is nothing so great as the glint in a person’s eye, when they feel they have been truly heard and understood.”
My question to you all is: do we listen enough? Are we intentional and mindful in our communication, be it in-person or virtually?
My guess is that we all have more work to do, but seeing that glint in a person’s eye is worth every ounce of effort.

Zigazoo is the new “TikTok” for kids. In a nutshell, it’s an education/entertainment app, which engages students in meaningful learning and problem-solving activities whilst entertaining them. It doesn’t seem so harmful, does it? But, is it safe for kids? The terms of service (but not the app description) clearly state that Zigazoo is meant to […]
The latest coronavirus scenarios: walking the tightrope from Clem Sunter At the beginning of March this year, I wrote an article painting three coronavirus scenarios for the world at large over the foreseeable future: “Much Ado About Nothing”, “The Camel’s Straw” and “Spain Again”. At the time, the number of global infections caused by the […]

Have you heard about the mildly seductive and The Unbearable Pain of Pleasure extremely elusive ‘I’ll be happy’ game? I used to play it all the time. “I’ll be happy when I lose 10 kilograms.”, “I’ll be happy when I find a lifetime partner.”, “I’ll be happy when the millions come rolling in.” There’s an […]
In September of 2012, a freak failure of the dynamic positioning system of the vessel Chris Lemons Speaker was working under, resulted in the umbilical which provides him with breathing gas, light and heat being severed completely. He was left on the sea-bed, in complete darkness 300 feet below the surface, with only the 5 […]

Whenever I speak about my entrepreneurial journey on Digital Inclusion, I often start by stating that I’m from Terry, MS. The big city of Terry with a population of a little over one thousand residents and only stop signs, no stoplights. I open with that statement because I want anyone reading or hearing about my […]
Howard Saunders, a leading retail keynote speaker was wrong. FORGET COVID. THIS IS THE KILLER VIRUS. I thought that the crescendo of hysteria that’s been festering like a planet sized boil in the wake of Trump and Brexit would dissipate once a serious crisis came along. It’s like we’d been massaging a giant zit with […]
